Copenhagen KAPy workshop (Climate Atlas in Python) + working week
Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and Klimaatlas would like to invite you all to take part in the KAPy v1.0 release workshop, to be held in Copenhagen on September 21-22 , followed by a working week on September 22-25.
The KAPy (Klimaatlases in Python) project aims to provide a platform for climate services to learn from each other, reduce duplication and enable rapid development of new climate services in other regions. The goal of this workshop is to mark the “feature-complete” release of KAPy, v1.0, and to bring both new and existing users up to speed with the many changes that have been made since the last release, v0.5.1. Many of you have contributed into the development of KAPy over the years and this is a great opportunity to refresh your knowledge. For the new or curious, it’s a great opportunity to get started with KAPy.
The workshop will consist of two parts, staring with a workshop from Monday 21st of September 09.00 to Tuesday 22nd at 12.00. The official two workshop days will be followed by a working week from Tuesday at 13.00 to Friday at 15.00 to dive deeper and solve problems together. Here we will work together on implementing our own KAPy pipeline based on our own datasets and needs, but also work together to help solve each others problems with input from the KAPy developers. Participants from the Ghana Meteorological Agency, the National Observatory of Athens, Greece, and the Danish Meteorological Institute will work on own applications and collaborate on problem solving. There is no formal programme during this time – just a space to work together – so feel free to come and go as you need.
A bit more about KAPy
KAPy is a climate data processing pipeline built on an open-source software stack centred on the Python language. The workflow control tool Snakemake from the field of bioinformatics provides reproducibility and scalability, xarray, xclim and xsdba provide core functionality, while the open-source paradigm enables collaboration and transparency. KAPy aims to automate the production of data for use in climate services, from pre-processing model outputs and observation data through bias-adjustment and downscaling to the calculation of climate indicators, aggregation over arbitrary polygons and ensemble statistics. The production of final products in local formats is not covered by KAPy, but examples in the tutorials show how this can be done. In addition to Klimaatlas Denmark, KAPy now also forms the core processing chain of a new climate service in Ghana, “Climate Atlas Ghana” and the current development of a climate service for Greece.
